What is a ‘Modern Witch’?

Hello lovelies, it’s Sarah! Well..who else would it be? Today I’m going to be sharing something that is quite personal. I’m not sure how some are going to take it, but that’s okay because this is who I am. I’m not making this post to please anybody, but only to inform anyone interested. I am a modern witch. That’s right, I said witch. To many the word ‘witch’ is a woman in folklore who is often portrayed as evil and cast spells/curses/hexes/etc. Let me inform you on what a witch really is.

A witch is a person (of any gender may I add!) that practices witchcraft.

Witchcraft according to Wikipedia means “…the practice of, belief in, magical skills and abilities that are able to be exercised individuals and certain groups”. In my opinion, witchcraft can mean something different to everyone, but generally it means practicing what we like to call magic.

A great article explaining it would be This one. I highly suggest you read it for more understanding. It is an article by huffington post asking questions to a modern witch.

Now that we covered the basics, what is a ‘modern witch’?

Basically it’s a modernized version of being a witch. We practice more of an everyday-friendly version of witchcraft and take old practices and turn them into ones that fit our modern needs.

Our practices may include meditation, cleansing, crystals, herbs etc. An example of a modernized version of the craft would be brewing a tea potion and using herbs corresponding to your needs. At night time, I’ll sometimes use lavender and chamomile in my tea for sleep and calmness. I consider this a potion.

Witchcraft could be as simple or complex as you like the main factor being intention. People can practice witchcraft like they do in the movies. Lighting candles, casting a circle, and chanting. Or they could make a herbal tea (potion) and set their intention while drinking it.

Basically, being a modern witch means that we’re just like every other person. We don’t think of ourselves any higher or lower than anyone else and I think being a witch really shouldn’t be a big deal.

Well that’s all I have to say about being a modern witch. I hope you are understanding of who I am and don’t judge me for it. If you don’t like or accept witchcraft or witchery that’s okay. The only reason I am making this post is because I know a lot of people are misinformed and confused on what a witch could be. If you have any questions please leave them below. If my followers are interested enough I might talk a bit more about this stuff on my blog. And as always, thank you for reading!

Sarah. Xx

  1. You taught me something today. Real good writing! It was interesting. Thanks sweetheart

  2. I think it’s great that people are still using practices such as ‘potions’ to try to sooth or medicate. So many things have properties and benefits that people don’t realise. It’s like you’re taking it back to basics!

    1. Thank you so much! I wish more people look at it this way instead of being intimidated. Thank you for reading lovely. Xx
